Nights Like These

This is the kind of rainstorm I love: complete with flashes of lightning and the distant rumble of thunder. If it were music, it would be a 90’s big hair rock song, complete with guitar solo. The on-off-on deluge seduces with unpredictability and gusto. Even the pedestrians with umbrellas are racing for the shelter of awnings and doorways.

I got drenched on the way to class this afternoon, but it was so warm that a moment later, when the rain let up and the windows thrown open, the breeze cooled my skin and dried my hair almost immediately.

It continues that way through dinner. On again, off again. I always look forward to going to bed on nights like these. The sound of rain is a lullaby, the thunder a soothing rumble. Is it a telling character trait that I can sleep through a rainstorm, but waking up in silence makes me uneasy? Probably.

In any case, tonight I’m in love with the weather.
